USING BITCOIN AS DIGITAL WARFARE ⛏
Space Force Major calls Bitcoin a weapon for Pentagon, a national strategic imperative to maintain US superpower in modern warfare.
A new MIT thesis written by Major Jason Lowery of the US Space Force suggests that Bitcoin could be used as a weapon by the Pentagon in modern warfare. The 400-page dissertation argues that the proof-of-work consensus mechanism of Bitcoin presents a major shift in the way that world powers could wage war. Lowery suggests that instead of traditional methods such as ground troops or air-launched nuclear weapons, nations could battle by competing for Bitcoin block rewards. The major believes that the US should support and adopt Bitcoin as quickly as possible in order to maintain its status as a global superpower, as it represents a "national strategic imperative."
Lowery is an active-duty astronautical engineer and National Defense Fellow at MIT, whose job is to advise senior military personnel on the implications of Bitcoin. He released his thesis as a book in February under the title "Softwar: A Novel Theory on Power Projection and the National Strategic Significance of Bitcoin." The book describes a scenario in which governments compete with hashrate, similar to a digital Cold War, with Bitcoin and bragging rights as the spoils. The major believes that Bitcoin's consensus mechanism could also be harnessed to deter denial-of-service attacks, making it prohibitively expensive for bad actors to spam software systems.
In contrast to Lowery's argument, the current stance of US regulators and the White House has been to offer no support for Bitcoin, instead opting to regulate digital assets through litigation. The major has warned US policymakers that the country risks losing its status as a global superpower if it does not support and adopt Bitcoin. He has also expressed concern about the potential for government regulators to ban Bitcoin on the grounds that it represents a threat to national security. Lowery argues that this would be a national strategic security hazard and that the best defense is to argue that it would be an undefeatable argument, provided one has the courage to use it.
